Introduction
Slag is a byproduct of the iron and steel making processes, it is formed during the fluxing process used to remove the non-ferrous constituents of the blast furnace charge. Slag composition shows the condition of furnace and the chemical reaction inside.Alloy manufacturers and producers alike can benefit from slag analysis from a materials, energy, and quality cost perspective by ensuring their slag composition is optimized.
Steelmakers can gain three benefits: efficient slag creation during their processes, increased efficiency for both material and energy use, and, ultimately, production of cleaner and better quality steel or alloys by monitoring the composition.
Beside Slag plays an important role as row material in cement and construction industry. In the cement industry it is used to reduce the amount of the expensive clinker component needed. XRF with its simple sample preparation and easy calibration maintenance is well suited to monitor the slag compositions.
What benefits can slag analysis bring if used efficiently and implemented correctly into applications?
By monitoring slag composition, steelmakers can achieve three benefits: efficient slag creation during their processes, increased efficiency for both material and energy use, and, ultimately, production of cleaner and better quality steel or alloys.
Silicon dioxide (SiO2), calcium oxide (CaO), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), and iron oxide (FeO) content are the most important features for slag analysis.
Traditionally, slag analysis was conducted by steelmakers on older benchtop XRF equipment in a remote laboratory, if at all. Analysis samples had the potential to stack up over time, This creates a reactive monitoring cycle. Handheld XRF could solve this problem by offering onsite analysis.
